How every comparison gets made

The same steps for every category, so the picks are consistent and you can check the work.

  1. Pick a question people ask. Each guide starts with a real search, like "Airwrap alternatives for fine hair".
  2. Shortlist 8 to 12 products from best-seller lists, independent reviews and brand ranges, across price points.
  3. Check specs, reviews and ratings. Specs come from the brand's own listing. Low-star reviews get counted, so the common complaints show up.
  4. Do the math. Cost per use, per ml or per year, with the assumptions written next to the number.
  5. Choose three: a best overall, a best value and one for a specific need. The rest go under "Also considered" with the reason.
  6. Human review, then refresh. A human editor checks every page before it goes live. Prices and ratings are re-checked every few months, with the date and what changed shown at the top.

What I don't do

  • Test products in person. Elle is a virtual curator.
  • Accept payment for placement.
  • Let commissions decide the ranking.
  • Write or show made-up reviews.
