Short answer

This page is for anyone buying a candle that looks and smells like a splurge without the splurge price. I compared 3 brands that list their wax and fragrance standards. My pick is the Voluspa Baltic Amber Classic: coconut wax, about 60 hours of burn and a gift-ready jar and box at a mid-range price.

The fine print

Watch out for

The most common catch with each, from reviews and specs.

  • Baltic Amber Classic Candle, 9 ozSingle wick, so scent spreads slowly in big rooms
  • Hinoki Fantome Candle, 8.5 ozMost expensive per hour here
  • Teakwood & Tobacco Standard Candle, 7.2 ozShortest burn: 40 to 50 hours

Skip it if

Who each one is wrong for

Saves you a return.

  • Baltic Amber Classic Candle, 9 ozYou want a strong scent in a large open room.
  • Hinoki Fantome Candle, 8.5 ozYou want the most burn time for your money.
  • Teakwood & Tobacco Standard Candle, 7.2 ozYou want a showpiece gift.

The details

  1. What separates them

Wax first. Voluspa uses a coconut blend, P.F. uses 100% soy and Boy Smells lists a coconut, beeswax and soy blend. None of the 3 lists paraffin, which some premium candles still use. NEST's Bamboo candle, for example, lists food-grade paraffin with soy.

Then the jar. Boy Smells and Voluspa look like gifts on their own. P.F.'s amber jar looks good but simpler.

  2. What 'clean burn' really means

No candle is smoke-free in every room. Voluspa says a clean burn depends on trimming the wick to 1/4 in before each burn and keeping the candle out of drafts. That advice applies to all 3.

Burn the first session long enough for the wax to melt to the edge. That prevents tunneling, which wastes wax and shortens burn time.

  3. Cost per hour

P.F. and Voluspa land close on cost per hour of burn. Boy Smells costs noticeably more per hour. You pay for the jar and the scent.

Also considered

Good options that didn't make the top three.

NEST New York Bamboo Classic CandleNot under $50 at Sephora, and it lists paraffin in its wax.
Voluspa Baltic Amber 3-Wick TinSame brand as my pick; better for big rooms but a shorter 40-hour burn.

How I compared

  • Checked price, size, wax and burn time on Voluspa and P.F. Candle Co. product pages on 2026-10-26.
  • Took Boy Smells' list price from Nordstrom and its wax and burn time from the Amazon listing title.
  • Calculated price per hour from list price and the brand's burn time claim.
  • Did not burn these candles myself.

Questions

Is soy or coconut wax better?

Both are plant-based. Coconut blends are often softer and spread scent well. Soy is the more common, lower-cost choice.

Why does my candle smoke?

Usually a long wick or a draft. Trim to 1/4 in before each burn.

Which is the best gift?

The Voluspa. It comes boxed and costs less than Boy Smells.
