Short answer

This page is for anyone who wants an enameled Dutch oven without paying Le Creuset prices. I compared 3 at different prices. My pick is the Made In 5.5 qt: made in France, oven-safe to 580°F, lifetime warranty, and it did not chip in Yahoo's knock test.

The details

  1. What separates them

Where they are made and how the enamel holds up. Made In and Staub are made in France. Lodge Essential is made in China and was the only pot that slightly chipped in Prudent Reviews' test. Made In showed no chips in Yahoo's knock test.

Interior color is the other split. Made In and Lodge have light interiors, so you can see browning. Staub's is black.

  2. What testers flagged

Lodge's lid is not tight, so more steam escapes during long braises. Its rounded base gives only about 7 inches of flat cooking surface, per Prudent Reviews.

Made In's tall knob is awkward with oven mitts. Staub's dark enamel makes it hard to tell browned from burnt.

  3. Cost over time

A good enameled pot lasts decades. Spread over 10 years, even the Staub costs little per year, and the Lodge is about a third of the Made In's price. If the Lodge chips in year 3, Lodge's enamel replacement policy covers you, per Prudent Reviews.

Questions

What size Dutch oven should I buy?

5.5 to 6 qt covers most recipes for 4 to 6 people and fits a standard bread loaf.

Can I bake bread in these?

Yes. Lodge and Staub are rated to 500°F and Made In to 580°F. Most no-knead bread bakes at 450°F to 500°F.

Is a Dutch oven a good wedding or holiday gift?

Yes. Pick a light interior for a newer cook. The Made In is my gift pick.

Are they dishwasher safe?

Hand washing is safest for enamel. Yahoo's tester listed the Lodge as not dishwasher safe.
